ICOST holds discussions with Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) to conduct diploma-level courses in Maldives

Institute of Correctional Service (ICOST) of Maldives Correctional Service has held discussions this morning with Universiti  Utara Malaysia (UUM) to conduct diploma and masters-level courses for prison officers in Maldives.

Commissioner of Prisons Mohamed Husham had attended the meeting while in Malaysia at the invitation of the Director General of Malaysian Prisons Datuk Wira Hj Zulkifli bin Omar. The meeting was also attended by the Dean of UUM Professor Dr Noor Azneena and Dr Nabeesa.

During the meeting, Commissioner had widely discussed of provision of the opportunity for Maldivian prison officers to participate in the diploma and masters courses conducted by UUM and to make them educated and capable officers.

One of the main discussion areas of the meeting include the possibility of UUM lectures and professors conducting the said courses in Maldives as it would be too costly to send the officers to Malaysia for the duration of the programme and therefore considerably limit the number of officers who can participate in the programme. The courses are also accredited by Maldives Qualification Authority (MQA).

In addition to Commissioner of Prisons Mohamed Husham, Maldives Correctional Service was also represented by the Head of Female Inmates Department at Maafushi Prison, Chief Prisons Officer Aishath Riuza and the Head of Correctional Training Unit of ICOST, First Class Prisons Officer Abdul Majeed.

Maldives Correctional Service continuously conducts various programmes to improve prisons and educate and develop prisons officers to their full potential. The Commissioner is currently in the process of transforming organisational aspects of Maldives Correctional Service.
