All the inmates under the custody of Maldives Correctional Service who took SSC exams in 2016 have achieved good results.
The 14 inmates who took the exams had taken classes for over a year in preparation of the exams. The results achieved by the inmates include two As, seven Bs and five Cs.
Deputy Commissioner of Prisons Hassan Zilaal stated that the government’s efforts to prevent inmates who achieve these kinds of accomplishments from venturing back into a life of crime can only be achieved with great cooperation from the community, hence employment opportunities are needed from the community for these inmates so that their time does not go to waste.
Maldives Correctional Service continues its efforts to rehabilitate inmates before releasing them back in to the community. In that regard, several educational and vocational are provided for inmates including workshops and trainings as well as MQA-accredited courses. A majority of inmates desire to utilise these opportunities to the fullest and that the community will work with them to support rehabilitation.
