Ministry of Gender and Family has today held an information session on the Gender Equality Act for the officers and staff of Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) at the MCS Head Office.
As per Team from Ministry of Gender and Family, the purpose of passing the Act was to ensure basic rights and independency for everyone without any prejudices based on gender. The purpose of the information session was to create awareness amongst the public of the Gender Equality Act.
Some of the factors highlighted in the session include encouragement to cease discrimination based on gender, providing equal opportunities and allowances to people of both genders working at the same level and position, to eliminate obstacles for females to work and take steps to create a conducive working environment and to stop stereotyping or represent certain roles for genders.
The team from Ministry of Gender and Family also stated that the Gender Equality Act mandates all institutions to set up a mechanism for employees to submit complaints.
The session, which was joined by several prison officers and civil employees of MCS; was conducted by Minister of Gender and Family’s Public Advocacy Specialist Mr Ahmed Anwar and Social Services Officer Ms Aishath Mazha.
