Maldives Correctional Service looks after inmates at prisons and remand centres while safeguarding their human rights.
Maldives government had implemented the international “Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment” on 20 April 2004. The Convention defines the term “torture” and conditions each state party to take effective legislative, administrative, judicial or other measures to prevent acts of torture in any territory under its jurisdiction. In addition, the clause 2(c) of Act no. 14/2013 Prison and Parole Act mandates Maldives Correctional Service to create safe and secure environment for inmates.
As such, the operating procedures of Maldives Correctional Service is compiled under the Act no. 14/2013 Prison and Parole Act, Anti-Torture Act and corresponding acts and regulations while securing the human rights of prisoners.
And the Inspector of Correctional Services inspects the prisons and remand centres under Maldives Correctional Service for proper adherence to the regulations compiled under Prison and Parole Act.
In addition, Human Rights Commission of the Maldives and other international agencies and organisations continue to visit the prisons and remand centres to monitor the conditions.
