The work of prison officers is very important for the safety and security of the nation- Home Minister

Minister of Home Affairs Honourable Umar Naseer has stated that even though uniformed prison officers are not seen active on the streets, the work that prison officers do while staying in the background is very important for the safety and security of the nation.

The Minister made the statement today while speaking at the inaugural ceremony of Prison Academy’s ASR training at Maafushi Prison.

The Minister said that the ASR was mandatory for all prison officers by law and will help in executing their duties more conveniently as well as make it easier to keep the peace and harmony of the prison. The Honourable Minister especially thanked Commissioner of Prisons Mohamed Husham for his initiatives in developing Maldives Correctional Service and also thanked all those who contributed to conducting the training.

The training will be conducted jointly by Police Academy and Prison Academy and teaches prison officers the skills of using pepper spray and C.S. gas. The training was also designed by the Police Academy and will be taught by facilitators from the Academy. The training modules include how pepper spray and CS gas are produced, how to use these weapons under operational circumstances and how to provide first aid to someone who got sprayed by one of these weapons.
