Aim of rehabilitation programmes should be preventing the return of released-inmates to prison – Commissioner of Prisons

Commissioner of Prisons Ahmed Shihan has stated that every prison officer should turn their mind to develop the inmates who are released on various programmes as those who would not re-offend and return to the prison.

The Commissioner made the statement while speaking at the inauguration of the “Facilitator Training Programme 2016” at Male’ Prison Annex this morning.

The Commissioner additionally said that before the inmates are reintegrated back to the community, they should be inducted while their skills should be developed in order to motivate them from steering clear of crime. He also said that that inmates can only be seen as fully rehabilitated, or the effectiveness of the outcome of rehabilitation programmes can only evaluated after assessing the number of inmates who return or not return to prison.
