Commissioner of Prisons Ahmed Shihan has today visited Maafushi Prison.
The purpose of the Commissioner’s visit is to see the area where the fire incident occurred late last night and to see the damages to the buildings in that area. In addition, the Commissioner also viewed the officers’ barracks located near the area. The Commissioner was joined by Deputy Commissioner of Prisons Hassan Zilaal and senior officers of Maldives Correctional Service.
A fire incident occurred last night around 2:57 am at the shop at Maafushi Prison and was put out by the Fire Team of Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) after combating it for about 30 minutes.
Maafushi Prison informs that the incident has fully burned the shop and the godown next door while a staff accommodation block in the vicinity has also been damaged beyond use. No persons were harmed during the fire incident though some items of the prisons officers were damaged.
