This is the first time inmates serving their sentences at the prisons had undertaken SSC exam. 16 inmates had taken the exam after attending classes close to a year. The results of the exam include five “B’s, nine “C”s and two “D”s.
The classes in preparation for the exam was held in the manner of teaching each secondary grade within three months; grade 8 taught from January to march, grade 9 taught from April to June and grade 10 taught from July to September.
The Executive Director of Institute for Correctional Studies (ICOST) Chief Prisons Officer Ahmed Riza said that this year there is hope for more inmate-participation based on the great results attained by the inmates who took part in the exam last year. He also said that it is also quite encouraging for the rehabilitative programmes run by ICOST.
In addition to Islam classes, ICOST is currently making preparations to hold classes for Dhivehi, English and Maths.
