Maldives Correctional Service has today started Islam classes for inmates as part of their efforts to educate and reform them into becoming citizens who are worthy to be accepted back into the community. These classes are being held at Maafushi Prison.
These classes are being held to prepare inmates to take the Secondary School certificate exams in 2017. 16 inmates had also successfully taken the SSC exams last year.
The classes are being held by Institute for Correctional Studies (ICOST) in collaboration with Institute for Quran and Sunnah and will be taught by facilitators from the latter. A total of 40 inmates are taking these classes.
ICOST informs that in addition to Islam classes, Dhivehi, English and Maths classes for inmates are to commence in the near future.
