A total of 612 inmates have completed rehabilitation programmes of Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) over the pastthree years.
These rehabilitation programmes are conducted by MCS to reform inmates, educate them and teach them useful skills which can help them earn a living after they are released from prison.
In that regard, MCS introduced “Rehabilitation Framework” in 2016 and started following the framework. There are four main phases in the framework, “discipline”, “psychology programmes”, “educational and vocational” and “prison community service”. There are set targets to be achieved at all phases.
The “educational and vocational” phases includes programmes such as basic Quran class, levels of Qirat course, wood carving, computer courses, house wiring and electrician course, agriculture course, sewing courses, pest and disease control, stocking flowers and carving of small dhonis.
Additionally, “prison community service” includes collaboration with companies to provide allowance-based work for inmates. MCS established “Ahuluveri Marukaz” to build cement blocks at K. Thilafushi for projects of Maldives Road Development Corporation (MRDC) as well as building anchor blocks for the construction of “oivaali” raft and constructing an engine house at K. Maniyafushi.
