Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) has today begun the “Certificate 1 in House Wiring and Electrician” course at Maafushi Prison targeted for inmates.
The five-week course is registered at Maldives Qualification Authority and is in line with MCS’s efforts to reform inmates and develop their skills.
A total of 22 inmates are participating in the course, which is targeted for those inmates interested in learning the skills of an electrician.
The course is being taught by facilitators from Institute for Correctional Studies (ICOST) of Maldives Correctional Service.
Maldives Correctional Service is currently conducting several courses in various fields for inmates, such as Qirat Course level 1, 2 & 3, Hifz classes, Islam classes and Basic Quran classes and computer classes.
The purpose of these programmes is to rehabilitate inmates to so that they become more aware, skilled and encouraged to steer clear of crime once they are released from prison; as opposed to staying in their cells wasting time with depressing and negative thoughts. These programmes also help to improve their thinking and behaviour as well as instil an interest to pursue education.
