Stakeholder-institutions hold discussions on challenges to filing charges on drug-related cases

Maldives Correctional Service has participated in the meeting of stakeholder-institutions held by Prosecutor General Uz Aishath Bisham to discuss the challenges in filing charges on drug-related cases and prosecuting the said cases. The meeting was yesterday at the Prosecutor General’s Office.

The meeting was attended by Commissioner of Prisons Mohamed Husham on behalf of Maldives Correctional Service.

The topics discussed at the meeting include the issues in the procedure of filing more than one drug charge on a single person and drafting a procedure on forwarding civil cases of persons who confess to drug use but not provided with treatment based on the indicative assessment from National Drug Agency to Prosecutor General’s Office to file charges instead of following the current practice of forwarding these cases to other courts. In addition, the participants also discussed challenges in filing drug charges together with charges on offenses committed by the said person while under the influence of drugs, difficulties in prosecuting other drug-related issues and providing treatment for drug-addicts, and the issues for drugs addicts to serve their sentences.

In addition to Prosecutor General Uz Aishath Bisham and Commissioner of Prisons Mohamed Husham, the meeting was attended by Deputy Prosecutors Uz Mahmood Saleem and Uz Mariyam Nihaayath as well as Assistant Prosecutor Generals Uz Hussain Nashid and Uz Aishath Fazna Ahmed. The meeting was also participated by the judiciary and Maldives Police Service.
