Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) has commenced workshops on Maldivian traditional lacquer work and kasabu weaving at Maafushi Prison.
The two workshops, which commenced on 14th July 2024; will continue fr 14 days. The Workshop on Maldivian Traditional Lacquer Work was is joined by 10 prison offices, while the Kasabu Weaving Workshop is joined by six prison officers and four civil staff.
The purpose of the two workshops is to train prison offices and civil staff in traditional works to rejuvinate the Maldivian culture; who in turn will train inmates in these traditional handicraft work. The traditional products made by the trained inmates will be displayed and sold at the soon-to-be extablished Cultural Centre at the Maafushi Prison. This will also provide a way for the inmates to earn an income.
Workshops and training programmes such as these is a big contribution towards the rehabilitation of inmates. Maldives Correctional Service always strives to rehabilitate inmates by making the days spent in prison productive by teaching them skills which will help them to earn a living once released from prison as reformed citizens and to reduce the risk of reoffending.
The Traditional Lacquer Work Workshop is conducted by Mr Abdul Azeez while the Kasabu Weaving Workshop is conducted by Ms. Fathimath Nadhuha Abdul Muhsin from Gathaa Tales. Additional workshops on other traditional handicraft work will also be carried out in the future.
