Juvenile Justice Training Programme conducted for those who work with juveniles

Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) in collaboration with Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) has conducted “Juvenile Justice Training Programme” for relevant staff who work with juveniles in the justice system.

The closing ceremony of the five-day training programme was held at Iskandhar Koshi today, with Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Hon. Ali Ihusan as the Chief Guest. In addition to the Minister, Commissioner of Prisons Hassan Zareer, Ministers of State for Homeland Security and Technology Uz. Ahmed Siddeeq and Dr Mohamed Kinaanath, Deputy Prosecutor General Uz. Ali Sameer, Head of Rehabilitation and Reintegration Command Superintendent of Prisons Ibrahim Nashid also joined the ceremony.

The Minister also awarded certificates to those who completed the Training Programme.

The Training Programme, which commenced on 11th August 2024, is mandatory for those who work or communicate with juveniles, or take legal actions against juveniles in various manners udner the section 26 of the Act no. 18/2019 (Juvenile Justice Act) in order to ensure that these individuals are trained or instructed accordingly to manage juveniles.

Hence, the purpose of the training is to create awareness among participants of the Act no. 18/2019 (Juvenile Justice Act) and the rights and protection to be ensured by the Act for juveniles.

The 29 participants of the Training Programme include staff from Maldives Correctional Service (MCS), Department of Juvenile Justice, Maldives Police Service, Prosecutor General’s Office, Attorney General’s Office, Drug court and Juvenile Court. A total of nine prison officers and three civil staff participated the Training Programme from MCS.

The Training Programme covered modules such as multi-sectorial coordination and cooperation, key principles of juvenile justice system, diversion and restorative justice.
