Maafushi Prison holds “The Nelson Mandela Rules” Refresher programme for prison officers

Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) in collaboration with UNODC has commenced “The United Nations Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners (The Nelson Mandela Rules)” Refresher programme for prison officers at Maafushi Prison today.

The current batch includes 20 prison officers from Maafushi Prison and is the second batch of the Refresher programme.

The purposes of the training programme are to induct prison officers on the ” The United Nations Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners (The Nelson Mandela Rules)” and to develop and streamline their work.

With the aim of developing prison officers and inducting all prison officers to the Mandela Rules; 14 officers were trained on the Nelson Mandela Rules as trainers via the “The Nelson Mandela Rules- Training of Trainers” programme with the assistance of UNODC in 2020. The current Refresher programme at Maafushi Prison is being conducted by two trainers of the above-mentioned TOT programme, Prison Sergeant Fathimath Zoona and Prison Sergeant Adam Zahid.

The third batch of the Refresher programme is scheduled to commence sometime in April.
