Some inmates of Maafushi Prison shifted to “Pentagon”

Some inmates have been shifted to “Pentagon”, a new prison block that is being built at Maafushi Prison.

Director General of Department of Penitentiary and Rehabilitation Services (DPRS) Mohamed Rasheed said today that inmates were shifted to Pentagon about 15 days ago, though the new building is incomplete. He said the shifting was done to improve the conditions of the Prison.

“The conditions of the Prison is severe following an arson attack. The inmates need a conducive place to pray especially as this is the holy month of Ramazan. So some were transferred to Pentagon in order to improve their situation during Ramazan,” said DG Rasheed.

Pentagon is being built at the west side of Maafushi Prison to with the capacity to house 300 inmates. DG Rasheed has yet to mention the number and category of inmates that were transferred or how they were transferred.
