Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) has tonight blocked the attempted smuggle of illegal items into Maafushi Prison from a woman who had hidden the items in her clothing.
During the search, two Nokia mobile phones, five SIM cards, five SD memory cards, two chargers, two phone batteries, wireless headset and two superglue tubes were confiscated from the women.
The woman in question had arrived at the Prison tonight for a scheduled conjugal visit with her spouse, who was serving a sentence at Maafushi Prison. She had also brought along their 11-month old baby for the visit.
The woman is now under the custody of Maldives Police Service.
Smuggling of illegal items into prisons is a huge obstacle to the rehabilitation of convicts and MCS strongly condemns such acts. MCS also urges families and public to avoid doing such acts which are harmful to convicts and the community.
