Visitor attempting to smuggle drugs into prison apprehended

Prison officers have apprehended a female trying to smuggle substances suspected to be illegal drugs to Maafushi prison. She had made the attempt while utilising the family visit allowance to visit to her brother.

The confiscated substances were hidden inside a cake.

Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) has noted the recent increase to smuggle illegal items into the prison during family visits. During last December, a visitor had tried to smuggle a smart phone, a charger, a battery of a basic mobile phone and a SIM card into the prison. The items were hidden among some items.

Smuggling of illegal items into prisons is a huge obstacle to the rehabilitation of convicts and MCS strongly condemns such acts. MCS also urges families and public to avoid doing such acts which are harmful to convicts and the community.
