Commissioner of Prisons Ahmed Shihan has stated that the success of Maldives Correctional Service should only be measuredby recidivism.
Commissioner Shihan made the statement while speaking at the flag hoisting ceremony held last night to mark the 18th anniversary of Maafushi Prison.
“We are not in the process of just preventing inmates from escaping from the prison. The days that they spent in the prison should be spent to change their behaviour and thinking in order to prevent them from re-offending. Our current aim is to prevent the return of inmates to prison by teaching them ways which will prove rewarding when they are integrated back in to the community,” said the Commissioner.
He further said that today’s Maldives Correctional Service is the result of the process that was started in 2006 to build a prison system under a modern management, and this institution has progressed in various areas. He also congratulated everyone present and said that he was proud of the fact that Maldives Correctional Service did not depend on any party and carried out its operations independently.
