Inmates with reduced sentences under R-37 opportunity starts third phase after completing second phase

Maldives Correctional Service has stated that the inmates whose sentences were reduced under the Regulation onHow to Reduce Sentences has started the third phase after completing the second phase of the programme.

MCS stated that these inmates can now travel back and forth the country after not being able to leave the island for two months. 

29 inmates had failed the second phase of the programme and hence been returned to prison. 

The R-37 opportunity  is a reforming opportunity provided by President H.E. Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyom to inmates sentenced for petty crimes.

The inmates were granted the opportunity to reform after accepting to obey certain conditions set by Maldives Correctional Service, such as being under house arrest for one month, not being able to leave the island for two months and after the completion of the first three month; to spend a certain amount of years living in the community with monitoring.
