12 Sri Lankan prisoners serving time at Maldivian prisons handed over to Sri Lankan authorities

Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) has today handed over 12 Sri Lankan prisoners serving time at Maldivian prisons to Sri Lankan authorities.
Maldives Correctional Service’s Superintendent of Prisons Ibrahim Mohamed Didi said that the 12 prisoners were handed over to the Sri Lankan authorities under regulation no. 2015-R/158 (Regulation on the procedures of exchanging prisoners between Maldives and foreign countries) drafted under the clause 37(A) of the Act no. 2014/38 (Prisoner extradition Act).
The prisoners were handed over to the Sri Lankan Naval boat “Shakti” in the presence of officials from Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Sri Lankan High Commission.
The Regulation on the procedures of exchanging prisoners between Maldives and foreign countries states that in order for an extradition to occur, consent should be given by the prisoner serving a sentence, the Minister of Home Affairs and the country the prisoner is being sent back to. The extradition procedures are implemented jointly by Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Home Affairs and Maldives Correctional Service.
Maldives Correctional Service had transported the 12 prisoners from Maafushi Prison to Male’ this morning for the hand over to the Sri Lankan authorities.
