Maldives Correctional Service hosts a special dinner night for inmates at Maafushi Prison

Maldives Correctional Service has hosted a special dinner night for inmates at Maafushi Prison yesterday.

The special dinner was held to celebrate the 17th anniversary of the Prison and the eighth anniversary of the establishment of the Emergency Support Group and in appreciation of all inmates for their cooperation and assistance to the activities organised to celebrate the anniversaries.

The Chief Guest of the event was Deputy Commissioner of Prisons Hassan Zilaal who commented on the joyful ambiance and the importance of working to release inmates back in the society successfully as good human beings. The Deputy Commissioner also urged the inmates to give their full cooperation to the hard-working prison officers and to maintain a good code of conduct.

The Deputy Commissioner also awarded certificates of appreciation to the inmates who assisted with the activities.

Maldives Correctional Service has chosen to utilise the service of inmates by giving them an allowance rather than outsourcing projects. This has proven to be quite beneficial for both parties as the inmates can make an income while the prisons can cut down costs.

Maafushi Prison is currently carrying out several projects with the enlisting 187 male and 16 female inmates; such as welding work, stonework, electronics repair work, AC repair work as well as sewing work, farming and handicraft work.
