Maldives Correctional Service has today started work to build three additional classrooms and a library for inmates at MaafushiPrison.

The additional classrooms are expected to solve the space limitations faced at the existing classrooms.

The existing classrooms can accommodate 200 inmates with the addition of the three classrooms will help to accommodate a total of 400 inmates. This will also make the time spent at the unit an educative and useful time for the inmates.

The additional building will be a great advantage to Maldives Correctional Service goal of rehabilitating inmates for successful reintegration into the community. As such, the addition of new classrooms will increase the number of classes being conducted for inmates.

Currently Maldives Correctional Service conducts different certificate levels of Quran Qari courses, computer courses, agricultural courses, sewing courses as well as pastry courses targeted for female inmates.

The work of building the new classrooms and library are being carried out by the inmates and is expected to be ready for use within one month if there are no major setbacks.
