Inmates whose sentences were reduced under R-37 opportunity completes first phase

Maldives Correctional Service has stated that the inmates whose sentences were reduced under the Regulation on How to Reduce Sentences has completed first phase of the programme.

The inmates were granted the opportunity to reform after accepting to obey certain conditions set by Maldives Correctional Service, such as being under house arrest for one month, not being able to leave the island for two months and after the completion of the first three month; to spend a certain amount of years living in the community with monitoring. 

MCS informs that 10 out of the inmates released to house arrest under R-37 opportunity has been returned to prison at the end of the designated one month of the first phase. 

The R-37 opportunity  is a reforming opportunity provided by President H.E. Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyom to inmates sentenced for petty crimes.
